Biggest influences in BMX:
Biggest influences in BMX for me... Corey Bohan, Mike Aitken, Corey Martinez, Sergio Layos, Ruben Alcantara, Tyrone Williams, Aaron Ross, Ryan Guettler, Gary Young. There's way too many, mostly the guys from the early 2000's.,
Where are you living at the moment? And where did you grow up?
I'm currently still living in the town i was born in, Townsville, North Queensland, I've been here all 36 years of my life so far. Not sure why when it can get to 40 degrees and 100% humidity but it is home.
What does a regular Saturday out on the bike usually consist of?
Saturday? that's usually a work day unfortunately, but Sunday afternoon into the night can go a few ways either a solo ride around the streets and city to pretty much ride and hop some gutters or if one of the guys is keen to brave the local parks against all the young kids, we will pick a park out of the 5 here or a couple an hour drive away and spend a few hours doing laps and making the most of whatever we've chosen to ride that day, I try to make the most out of what short time I do get some weeks to ride whether it means i have to ride on my own in a carpark, it's all BMX to me.
What are you doing for work these days?
My wife and I have been operating a one truck transport business for the last 5 years, trucks have been as big of an obsession as BMX has been in my entire life.
I've been a truck driver since 2009, it has definitely taken its toll on my free time due to the hectic hours involved in the job and owning and running a business these last few years but when it's something that you love to do and have a serious passion for you tend to forget it's actually a job. Most of my work is within a 600km radius of home but can be into some pretty remote areas and challenging with the wet season weather up here.
Top 3 places you’ve ridden over the years:
The Incline Club (2015).
Clint's backyard ramp, endless lines and unreal hospitality.
Friday night at the local (Murray skatepark) from 2001 - 2010, it'd start at 5pm and usually finish at 6am, there'd be 30 people at the skatepark and about 10 of us would ride through the night into the city for some street if we wanted to change it up. Nobody cared how you rode or who you were, we all just hung out rode, laughed and enjoyed it. Hopefully some of the guys read this and it brings back some good memories.
What are your interests outside of Riding?
Outside of riding, it'd be trying to get away to other places in the country or world with my wife when we can get the time to do it, just getting time at home with her and our two dogs is pretty valuable. As I mentioned earlier trucks are also an obsession, similar to how guys like cars. I'm a truck guy so I try to go to truck shows, I've bought trucks and trailers to tinker with and tidy up in the past while it rains for 2-3 months up here as i like to find a project to occupy my spare time.
Tell us something about your local scene:
Local scene? What's that? We have about 5 skateparks in the region here, everything is very small and can be very disheartening sometimes once you've been to bigger places to ride but we still make the most of it, we could have nothing to ride like some places do. There's still a couple of guys here that don't mind a ride from time to time but because a few of them have started having families and living the normal life of buying a house or having a career riding takes a bit of a back seat and age obviously plays a factor as well.
On a rare occasion we might all line up on the same day and there'd be maybe 5 of us together but it's definitely a hard thing to line up. I ride with a couple of guys slightly older than myself true BMX lifers and they also play around on the race track so i decided i'd join in on the track for a change of scenery and to continue to have guys to ride bikes with on something i'm definitely out of my element on.
It's a pretty cool thing up here to run into a new bmxer that's either moved to town for work or just travelling through the area it brings the stoke level back up.
What’s your “go-to” trick you just have to do every session out on your bike?
Not sure if I actually have a go to trick, I do a lot of manuals, barspins and tailwhips, they (tailwhips) took me 6 good months to learn in 2002 so I seem to do one of them most days, I probably have a fear of losing them I think.
What motivates you to go out and ride all the time?
The freedom of forgetting everything else in your life when you roll around, you can be having a bad day, jump on your bike, concentrate on that and your mind forgets your bad day
i usually get pretty motivated when I get to head to the Brisbane / Gold Coast area to ride with all the guys there the plane tickets never seem to get cheaper though.
Favourite Product that you run?
Can I say brakes? I"ve never really been a brakeless guy, I like fufanus and that sort of stuff too much to ride brakeless, don't know if that counts.
I do like my Profile Blackjack sprocket, simply because when Tj Lavin used to have them in the early 2000's. I could never afford one they looked cool and they are solid with 4 positions for your crank arm to bolt to it.
